Thomas Robert Daley was born on May 21, 1994, in Plymouth, Devon, England. His diving career began at age eight, quickly identifying him as a talent within the sport. By nine, he was making an impact in national and international competitions. Daley joined Plymouth Diving Club and gained National Lottery funding to support his training. In 2008, at age 13, he became the youngest individual to win a gold medal at the European Championships in Eindhoven. He represented Great Britain at the Beijing 2008 Olympics at 14, becoming Britain’s youngest competitor and the youngest from any nation to reach an Olympic diving final. He achieved a career-best ranking of number one in the FINA World Aquatics Championships Diving Rankings for the 10m platform in 2009, also securing his first World Championship gold that year.
Daley continued to achieve significant milestones, including two gold medals for England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the 10m synchro diving and 10m Individual Platform competitions. He earned his first Olympic medal, an individual bronze, at the London 2012 Games. He added another Olympic bronze in 2016 in the synchronized event with Daniel Goodfellow. A significant career achievement came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he won Olympic gold alongside Matty Lee in the men’s 10m synchronized platform and a bronze in the individual event. Daley’s achievements also include four World Championship titles, two junior World Championship titles, five European titles, and four Commonwealth titles, making him a highly decorated diver.
Beyond his athletic career, Daley has become a prominent public figure. In 2013, he publicly came out, using his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. He has been involved with various media activities, including a role as a mentor on the ITV celebrity diving show “Splash!” from 2013-2014, and hosting the ITV2 travel series “Tom Daley Goes Global” in 2014. In August 2024, following securing a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Daley announced his retirement from professional diving. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2022 for his services to diving, LGBTQ+ rights, and charity.
