Tim van Rijthoven, born on April 24, 1997, in Roosendaal, Netherlands, turned professional in 2015. He began his tennis journey with his parents, who were both tennis coaches. As a junior, he reached a combined ITF ranking of world No. 13 in 2015. His early career milestones included reaching the quarterfinals of the 2014 Wimbledon Championships boys’ singles tournament and the semifinals of the boys’ doubles. He made his ATP World Tour debut in 2016 at the Winston-Salem Open as a lucky loser. Van Rijthoven continued to develop his skills, steadily progressing through the ranks.
A significant turning point in his career occurred in 2022. Ranked No. 205, he received a wildcard entry into the Libéma Open. During this tournament, he achieved five ATP Tour wins, notably defeating world No. 14 Taylor Fritz, world No. 9 Félix Auger-Aliassime, and world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the final. This victory marked his maiden ATP title, making him the lowest-ranked player to win an ATP title in 2022 and the first Dutchman to win the ATP 250 event since 2003. Following this success, his ranking rose to No. 106. He then made his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round where he competed against Novak Djokovic. He also appeared at the US Open, advancing to the second round.
Van Rijthoven officially announced his retirement from professional tennis in July 2025 due to a persistent elbow injury, concluding a career that saw him achieve a career-high ranking of No. 101 on July 18, 2022. Throughout his career, he accumulated $838,736 in prize money from singles and doubles combined. He represented the Netherlands in the Davis Cup with a 2-1 win-loss record. His professional journey reflects dedication and notable achievements, particularly his impressive performance in 2022.
