Torey James DeFalco was born on April 10, 1997, in Springfield, Missouri. He spent his early childhood on a farm in Missouri before his family relocated to California when he was nine years old. While attending Huntington Beach High School, DeFalco quickly gained national recognition for his skills in volleyball, which led to a highly successful collegiate career. He was a top recruit and attended California State University, Long Beach, where he pursued a major in Consumer Affairs. During his time at Long Beach State, he led his team to the NCAA Final Four all four years from 2016 to 2019, securing two NCAA National Championships in 2018 and 2019. His individual accolades included being named AVCA Player of the Year in 2017 and 2019, AVCA Newcomer of the Year in 2016, and a four-time AVCA First Team All-American (2016-2019). DeFalco was further honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 NCAA Championships and was a three-time NCAA All-Tournament Team selection (2016, 2018, 2019).
DeFalco’s professional career began in June 2019 when he signed with the Italian team Volley Callipo. He then moved to AZS Olsztyn for the 2021-22 season and later to Asseco Resovia for the 2022-23 PlusLiga season, where he contributed to winning the CEV Cup in 2024. Currently, he plays as an outside hitter for JTEKT Stings in Japan, a role he took on in 2024. DeFalco has been a prominent member of the U.S. Men’s National Team since 2015, making his debut at age 18. He represented the U.S. at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. His international career highlights also include a gold medal at the 2023 Olympic Qualifier and the 2023 NORCECA Continental Championship, as well as silver medals at the 2023 and 2022 Volleyball Nations League Finals and the 2019 NORCECA Volleyball Championship, where he was named Best Outside Spiker. He also won a bronze medal at the 2019 FIVB World Cup.
Beyond his indoor volleyball achievements, DeFalco also has a background in beach volleyball, competing at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and the U19 World Championships. He has been recognized as the Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker at the 2014 NORCECA Boys Youth U19 Continental Championship, where he earned a gold medal. Throughout his career, Torey has consistently demonstrated high-level performance and leadership, establishing himself as a key player in American and international volleyball.
