About

William John Heaton Greenwood was born on October 20, 1972, in Blackburn, Lancashire. He was educated at St Mary’s Hall and Sedbergh School, where he also showcased talent in cricket before focusing on rugby. Greenwood pursued higher education at Durham University, earning a BA in economics in 1994, and briefly worked as a trader in London before his professional rugby career began. He played club rugby for Preston Grasshoppers and Waterloo R.F.C. before joining Harlequins in 1994. In 1996, he moved to Leicester Tigers due to limited first-team opportunities at Harlequins, and later returned to Harlequins in 2000.

Greenwood’s international career began even before his official England debut, as he was selected for the British & Irish Lions’ tour to South Africa in 1997. He made his England debut in 1997 and became a central figure in the team, forming key center partnerships. A significant milestone in his career was being a member of England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup-winning team, where he was a joint top try-scorer with five tries. He was made vice-captain for the 2004 Six Nations tournament under Lawrence Dallaglio, earning his 50th cap against Ireland. After 55 England caps and 31 tries, he retired from professional rugby at the end of the 2005/06 season, having helped Harlequins regain promotion to the top league.

Following his retirement, Greenwood moved into media roles, working as an analyst for Sky Sports on ‘The Rugby Club’ and live premiership matches. He also served as an analyst for ITV during the 2007 Rugby World Cup and writes a column for The Daily Telegraph discussing the England rugby team. Beyond sports media, Greenwood co-founded SuperSkills Experiences, a travel and events business, and in November 2020, he became the Chief Customer Officer at Afiniti, an AI-driven customer experience software company based in London. In 2021, he co-authored the book ‘World Class: How to Lead, Learn and Grow like a Champion’ with Ben Fennell. He is also a patron for Child Bereavement UK and Borne, a medical research charity, for which he undertook a trek to the North Pole in 2018, raising over £750,000 in memory of his son.
