Yuan Yuan Tan

Yuan Yuan Tan is a distinguished Chinese ballet dancer, celebrated for her remarkable contributions to the world of ballet. After securing a gold medal at the 5th International Ballet Competition in Paris in 1992, Yuan Yuan Tan went on to earn a gold medal and the prestigious Nijinsky Award at Japan’s 1st International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition in 1993, quickly establishing her as a formidable talent on the international stage. Her professional journey began with entry into the Shanghai Dance School in 1987, where her foundational training quickly led to international recognition and set the stage for a distinguished career. In 1994, Tan joined the San Francisco Ballet as a soloist dancer.

Beyond her stage performances, Tan championed Chinese American artists in the San Francisco Bay Area and served as a crucial cultural ambassador during the San Francisco Ballet’s first historic tour of China. Her influence extended into media, where she was recognized in Chelsea Clinton’s children’s book She Persisted Around the World and named one of Time’s ’20 people under 40.’ In 2020, she expanded her reach by appearing on ‘Dance Smash,’ a prominent Chinese talent show, further connecting with a broader audience. On February 14, 2024, Yuan Yuan Tan retired from the San Francisco Ballet after an illustrious 29 seasons, concluding her tenure with a final critically acclaimed performance as Marguerite in Sir Frederick Ashton’s Marguerite and Armand. With a declared intention to continue her profound influence on the ballet world, Tan is set to be recognized with the prestigious Carnegie Corporation of New York Great Immigrant Award in 2025, underscoring her ongoing impact and legacy in the arts.
