Yuan Yuan Tan

Yuan Yuan Tan was born on February 14, 1976, in Shanghai, China. Her ballet career began at age 11 when she entered the Shanghai Dance School. Despite initial opposition from her father, who wished for her to pursue a medical career, her mother’s support and a decisive coin toss led her to dance. Tan quickly garnered international recognition, securing a gold medal and the Nijinsky Award at Japan’s 1st International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition in 1993, and another gold medal at the 5th International Ballet Competition in Paris in 1992. Her rapid ascent in the ballet world marked her as a notable talent from an early age.

At 18, Yuan Yuan Tan joined the San Francisco Ballet as a soloist dancer. Her exceptional talent and dedication led to her promotion to principal dancer just two years later, at the age of 20, in 1997. This made her the youngest principal dancer in the history of the San Francisco Ballet. Throughout her nearly three-decade tenure with the company, Tan performed lead female roles in numerous significant ballets, including Helgi Tomasson’s “Giselle,” “Swan Lake,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Nutcracker.” She also originated roles in various works, showcasing her versatility and collaborative spirit with choreographers such as George Balanchine, Yuri Possokhov, and Wayne McGregor. Her repertoire included classics like Balanchine’s “Symphony in C” and Robbins’ “In the Night,” solidifying her position as a leading ballerina of her generation.

Tan championed Chinese American artists in the San Francisco Bay Area and served as a cultural ambassador during the San Francisco Ballet’s first tour of China. She has been recognized in Chelsea Clinton’s children’s book “She Persisted Around the World” and was named one of Time’s “20 people under 40.” In 2020, she appeared on “Dance Smash,” a Chinese talent show, further demonstrating her broad influence. On February 14, 2024, her 48th birthday, Yuan Yuan Tan retired from the San Francisco Ballet after 29 seasons, with her final performance as Marguerite in Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Marguerite and Armand.” She stated her intention to continue dancing and influencing the ballet world.
