Zachary Levi Pugh was born on September 29, 1980, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He adopted his middle name, Levi, as his stage surname. His childhood involved moving across the country before his family settled in Ventura County, California. At age six, Levi began acting, singing, and dancing in school and local theater productions. After graduating from Buena High School, he pursued acting in Los Angeles, performing in regional theater productions such as “Grease,” “The Outsiders,” “Oliver,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Big River.” His portrayal of Jesus in Ojai’s “Godspell” garnered him attention from Hollywood.
Levi’s early career in television included a supporting role in the 2002 TV movie “Big Shot: Confessions of a Campus Bookie.” He then became a series regular as Kipp Steadman in “Less Than Perfect” from 2002 to 2006. He also appeared in the television movie “See Jane Date” in 2003. A significant turning point in his career came in 2007 when he landed the starring role of Chuck Bartowski in the action-comedy series “Chuck,” which ran until 2012. This role earned him recognition and a Teen Choice Award for Best Action Actor – Choice TV Series in 2010. During this period, he also lent his voice to Flynn Rider in Disney’s animated musical film “Tangled” (2010), performing the Grammy Award-winning song “I See the Light” with Mandy Moore. He reprised this voice role in the 2012 short film “Tangled Ever After” and the 2017 television series “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.”
In the following years, Levi expanded his filmography, appearing as Fandral in “Thor: The Dark World” (2013) and “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017). He made his Broadway debut in “First Date” in 2013 and later received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his role as Georg Nowack in the 2016 Broadway revival of “She Loves Me.” In 2019, Levi took on the titular superhero role in “Shazam!,” a film that garnered positive critical reception for his performance. He reprised this role in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” (2023). Other notable works include playing Kurt Warner in the biographical sports drama “American Underdog” (2021), appearing in “The Mauritanian” (2021), and voicing roles in animated features such as “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” (2023) and “Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again” (2022). Levi also founded his production company, Wyldwood Productions, in 2020.
