About

Zion Lateef Williamson was born on July 6, 2000, in Salisbury, North Carolina. His athletic journey began early, playing soccer and football as a quarterback before focusing on basketball. His mother, Sharonda Sampson, a former sprinter, and his stepfather, Lee Anderson, a former college basketball player at Clemson, provided significant influence and coaching in his early development. Williamson attended Spartanburg Day School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where his physical growth and basketball skills quickly became apparent. By his freshman year, growing from 5’9″ to 6’3″, he developed the ability to dunk and began playing for the South Carolina Hornets AAU team alongside future NBA player Ja Morant. During his high school career, he led his team to three consecutive state championships and earned the South Carolina Mr. Basketball recognition in his senior season, widely regarded as one of the top five players in his class.

Williamson’s collegiate career at Duke University was marked by immediate success, solidifying his status as a top prospect. In his freshman season from 2018 to 2019, he quickly became a standout player, setting a school record for single-game points by a freshman and earning numerous accolades, including ACC Player of the Year, ACC Athlete of the Year, and ACC Rookie of the Year. His season also saw him named AP Player of the Year and Sporting News College Player of the Year, among other honors. Despite a knee sprain that sidelined him for part of the season, he returned to lead Duke to an ACC tournament championship, earning MVP honors. His impactful single season concluded with impressive statistics: 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game, shooting 68% from the field.

In 2019, Williamson was selected as the first overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA draft, marking the beginning of his professional career. His rookie season in 2019-2020, though affected by injury, showcased his potential, earning him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He continued to build on this in the 2020-2021 season, where he was selected for his first NBA All-Star game, becoming the fourth-youngest player to achieve this. Williamson has faced challenges with injuries throughout his career, including a Jones fracture in 2021 and recurring hamstring issues. Despite these setbacks, he secured a five-year rookie extension with the Pelicans in 2022 and has demonstrated his exceptional talent, including recording his first career triple-double in February 2025.
