Peter Drury’s Commentary on Michelob ULTRA Tribute to Messi | MN2S

Original football commentary now threads through Michelob ULTRA’s “Tab Closed” campaign, pairing one of the sport’s most recognised voices with a send-off for Lionel Messi’s six World Cups.

Lionel Messi’s international retirement is still the biggest story in football. He confirmed the decision on 31 August 2026, in a message posted to his own Instagram: “It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts deeply, but I understand that the time has come.” It closed a chapter built on six World Cups, 207 caps and a record 125 goals for Argentina. Because Michelob ULTRA’s “Tab Closed” campaign turns that entire World Cup career into a bar receipt, the retirement news has made the campaign more relevant now than it was on release day. The words carrying some of its biggest moments belong to football commentator Peter Drury.

A bar tab twenty years in the making

Michelob ULTRA built “Tab Closed” around a simple idea. A bar receipt itemises everything Messi achieved at World Cups instead of drinks, tallying matches won, goals scored and records broken across two decades of tournament football. Director Zak DeLange, working with production company Underhill Films, brought the concept to screen in a 60-second spot that closes on the line “Superior is Worth Playing For.”

The film launched on 20 July 2026, days after Argentina’s final defeat. It aired nationally on Telemundo during the network’s World Cup post-match coverage, then extended across Michelob ULTRA’s social and digital channels. Every detail plays into the concept: the receipt itself prints from “Full Time Tavern, Est. 2006,” the year of Messi’s World Cup debut, and the spot closes on his reflection in the printer glass, pointing to the sky in his familiar goal celebration. The numbers hold up too. Messi finished his World Cup career with 21 goals, one behind France’s Kylian Mbappé for the tournament’s all-time record. In New York, the brand took the tribute further with a billboard in Times Square and a mural of Messi in Little Argentina, Queens, painted by artist Andaluz. Ricardo Marques, Michelob ULTRA’s senior vice president of marketing, summed up the thinking behind it: “Beyond soccer, Lionel Messi stands among the greatest athletes in history.”

Where Peter Drury’s commentary comes in

As the wider campaign came together, goal was not to invent but to look for existing broadcast commentary tied directly to Messi’s World Cup moments, rather than scripting new lines from scratch the goal was to tap directly into the nostaglia. MN2S arranged the licensing of original commentary, Peter Drury voice now plays under the film itself, running beneath the receipt as it prints out Messi’s career.

The voice behind football’s biggest moments

Drury has spent more than three decades building the reputation that made this license worth pursuing. He covered four FIFA World Cup™ tournaments and four European Championships for ITV between 1998 and 2013, then moved to BT Sport before becoming NBC Sports’ lead Premier League commentator in 2022. He added Sky Sports’ weekly Premier League coverage in 2023 and has voiced the Pro Evolution Soccer and eFootball video game series since 2015. Football fans quote him constantly online; his calls on Messi alone circulate widely on TikTok and YouTube long after the final whistle. For a campaign built on a legacy, few voices carry as much instant credibility.

A beverage brand’s homage, made newly relevant by the retirement

Michelob ULTRA is the official beer sponsor of the FIFA World Cup, and 2026 gave the brand the biggest stage in the tournament’s history to make good on that position. The competition expanded to 48 teams for the first time and was co-hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada, pulling football further into the American mainstream than any previous edition. A beer brand built around sport therefore had an unusually large audience already watching when Messi’s Argentina reached the final.

What has changed since July is timing. “Tab Closed” launched as a World Cup send-off; it now doubles as a retirement tribute, without a single frame needing to change. The Michelob ULTRA branding that runs through the film, from the tap behind the bar to the bottle on the counter to the receipt itself, sits inside content that football fans are actively searching for and sharing this month, rather than inside a generic ad break competing for attention. Consequently, the campaign’s commercial value has grown alongside the news cycle, not despite it. That is the payoff of building a tribute from something durable, real World Cup history and a real commentator’s words, rather than a topical joke that expires with the moment it was made for.

Why brands are borrowing the commentary booth

Licensing real commentary instead of writing a fresh voiceover says something wider about where sports marketing is heading. Football audiences recognise Drury’s cadence immediately, so his words land as documentary fact rather than as advertising copy. As a result, the emotion in “Tab Closed” reads as earned rather than manufactured, which matters for a brand trying to mark a genuine sporting farewell. Similarly, it points to a broader shift in celebrity and sports marketing: real broadcast IP, licensed directly from the person who created it, increasingly does work that a scripted line cannot, especially when the moment it is attached to is still unfolding in the news.

A personal send-off

The film carries extra weight because Messi shared it himself. It appears on his own Instagram account, posted as a paid partnership with Michelob ULTRA and captioned in his own words: “More than 20 years. Six FIFA World Cups™. Countless memories. Thank you all for being there every step of the way.” A brand tribute built from real commentary meets a personal message from the player it was made for, carried straight to his own audience rather than left to brand channels alone.
