The very words “Christmas party” strike fear into many people’s hearts – and for good reason. They might be imagining cheap wine, a dry turkey breast and some lacklustre tribute act as entertainment. If it’s comedy with a difference that you’re looking for, you won’t find many performers better suited than the inimitable Nina Conti, who is sure to appeal to audiences of all ages and demographics.

Who is Nina Conti?

If you think you’ve seen everything that comedy has to offer, then you need to watch a show by Nina Conti. One of the UK’s foremost comedians, she’s also a ventriloquist and is joined on stage by a cast of puppets, most frequently a Scottish grandmother called Granny and a deadpan monkey imaginatively named Monk.

She was once mentored by the experimental writer, theatre director and improviser Ken Campbell and started her career as an actress, before a successful segue into comedy. She’s a familiar face thanks to appearances on shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats and Russell Howard’s Good News, but it is as a stand-up comic that Conti really comes into her own.

The character of Granny embodies the stereotype of a dour Scot, often chiding Conti unreasonably – for instance, for having two legs – “Oh, two legs? You’re spoiling me.” Granny says. Monk on the other hand is extremely cynical and also berates Conti constantly when she refuses to acquiesce to his requests. He often appears to be annoyed by having to appear on stage and frequently voices this irritation by swearing and otherwise being rude.

Her two most favoured puppets are also joined by a face mask, which she can put on an audience member and use to make them talk. This often includes making them say or agree to things which their body language suggests they don’t really want to!
