Confidence Man is an Australian electro-pop band formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 2016. The group consists of Janet Planet (Grace Stephenson) on vocals, Sugar Bones (Aiden Moore) on vocals and dancing, and the masked figures Reggie Goodchild (Lewis Stephenson) on keyboards and Clarence McGuffie on drums. The members originated from the Brisbane music scene, having been involved with other bands such as The Belligerents, Moses Gunn Collective, and The Jungle Giants. Their initial musical collaborations started as a casual endeavor, which evolved into a recognized project. In March 2017, they signed with UK label Heavenly Records and released their debut UK single, “Bubblegum.”
The band’s debut album, “Confident Music for Confident People,” was released on April 13, 2018. This was followed by extensive touring across Europe, including festival appearances and a sold-out show at Scala in London, before returning to Australia for further dates in September of the same year. Their second album, “Tilt,” released on April 1, 2022, reached number 7 on the ARIA charts. “Tilt” expanded on their sound, incorporating elements of 90s rave culture and club music. The album received critical acclaim, notably after their performance at Glastonbury Festival in 2022. The band has consistently engaged in collaborations, releasing a remix EP “Re-Tilt” in September 2022 featuring artists like Tame Impala and CHAI.
Confidence Man released their third album, “3AM (La La La),” on October 18, 2024, which reflects their experiences moving to London and draws inspiration from British rave culture. The band has been recognized with various awards and nominations, including winning Best Independent Dance/Electronica Album at the AIR Awards in 2019 for “Confident Music for Confident People” and in 2023 for “Tilt.” They have also been nominated for ARIA Music Awards and won The Live Act Award at the Rolling Stone UK Awards in 2024.
