Luther Dickinson

Luther Dickinson, the son of Memphis music legend Jim Dickinson, was immersed in a creative musical environment from a young age. Despite this exposure, he identifies that musical proficiency, particularly on the guitar, did not come naturally to him, requiring consistent practice and dedication. His father, while initially brutally honest about his playing, became a significant mentor once Luther began songwriting, teaching him about song structure and the collaborative process. This early guidance fostered a highly adaptable and creative approach that Luther applies to all aspects of his musical career, from producing records to crafting set lists. He credits his natural creative process and persistent practice as foundational to his success, highlighting a continuous journey of learning and refinement.

Dickinson’s career has been characterized by active involvement in numerous significant projects and collaborations. He is best known for his work with the North Mississippi Allstars, a five-time Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award-winning group he formed with his brother, Cody. In 2007, he gained further recognition when Rolling Stone Magazine labeled him a “New Guitar God,” the same year he joined The Black Crowes as their guitarist, a role he held for a period. His versatility is evident through projects like “The Word,” an instrumental sacred steel/gospel blues jam band formed in 2000 with artists such as Robert Randolph and John Medeski. He also organized “The Wandering” in 2012, a collective of female musicians featuring artists like Shannon McNally and Amy LaVere, followed by the 2019 “Solstice” album with Amy Helm and Allison Russell. More recently, Dickinson partnered with JD Simo, releasing the album ‘Do the Rump!’ and embarking on a tour, showcasing his continued engagement with diverse musical partners and styles. These collaborations illustrate his commitment to musical exploration and community building within the blues and rock genres.
