Anthony McFarland Jr. signed with the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League (UFL). He finished the 2024 season with 337 rushing yards, 249 receiving yards, and 5 total TD's in 7 games. His contract was terminated on August 19, 2024, to sign with an NFL team.
McFarland, 26, has appeared in 17 career games, including three for Pittsburgh last season. He then signed with the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas and then signed with the Miami Dolphins on August 19, 2024.
Anthony McFarland Jr. has toiled mostly on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster's fringe, with just 51 career touches in the regular season while being drafted by them in the 4th round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Anthony McFarland Jr. was born on March 4, 1998, in Hyattsville, Maryland. He began his football journey at Ernest Everett Just Middle School before attending DeMatha Catholic High School. Despite an injury that sidelined him during his senior high school season, McFarland Jr. was recognized as an Under Armour All-American, and by 247 Sports and Rivals as the third-best running back nationally. He committed to the University of Maryland, redshirting his first year in 2017. His college career at Maryland saw him play for two seasons, rushing for 1,034 yards on 131 carries with four touchdowns in 2018, and 614 yards on 114 carries with eight touchdowns in 2019. Following his impactful college performance, McFarland Jr. decided to forgo his final two seasons and enter the 2020 NFL Draft.
McFarland Jr.’s professional career officially began when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He made his NFL debut in Week 3 of the 2020 season, contributing to a 28–21 victory against the Houston Texans. During his tenure with the Steelers from 2020 to 2023, he amassed 146 rushing yards and 87 receiving yards across 17 regular season games. He faced periods on injured reserve, including at the start of the 2021 season and in September 2023 due to a knee injury. His time with the Steelers also included periods on the practice squad before he was released in December 2023.
Following his time in the NFL, McFarland Jr. signed with the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League (UFL) on February 6, 2024. In his first stint with the Brahmas, he recorded 337 rushing yards, 249 receiving yards, and 5 total touchdowns in 7 games during the 2024 UFL season. His strong performance with the Brahmas led to him signing with the Miami Dolphins on August 19, 2024. Although his time with the Dolphins was brief, he later returned to the San Antonio Brahmas, re-signing with the team on March 6, 2025.
