Blake James McGrath was born on November 21, 1983, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. His early television roles included Stuart Sanger in “Choices of the Heart: The Margaret Sanger Story” (1997) and Casey in the TV adaptation of “Goosebumps: Stay Out of the Basement.” In 2001, McGrath performed for Michael Jackson’s thirtieth-anniversary special. He later danced alongside Paulina Rubio at the 2004 Latin Grammy Awards. His early career also involved appearances in Gap campaigns with Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as advertisements for iPod, JCPenney, and Hummer. He appeared in the films “Butterbox Babies,” “Life With Mikey,” “Chicago,” and “Rent.” He studied dance at Tiffany Dance Academy, Deborah Thomson School of Dance, and Joanne Chapman School of Dance.
McGrath gained wider recognition as a contestant on the first season of “So You Think You Can Dance” in 2005. He was also featured in the MTV reality dance show “DanceLife” in 2007, produced by Jennifer Lopez. From 2008 to 2010, he served as the lead choreographer for audition cities and an alternating third judge on “So You Think You Can Dance Canada.” In 2014, he appeared on the Lifetime series “Dance Moms” as a guest choreographer for the Candy Apples Dance Center. He has performed with artists such as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Kylie Minogue, Adam Lambert, Ashanti, Destiny’s Child, Katy Perry, Craig David, and Jewel. He is the owner of VIP Dance Events, which organizes tours in Canada, and also leads the Blake McGrath Mentorship program, aimed at developing dancers.
McGrath pursued a musical career, releasing his debut single “The Night (Only Place To Go)” in April 2010. His follow-up single, “Relax,” also won a MuchMusic Video Award. His first studio album, “Time to Move,” was released in November 2010, reaching number 39 on the Canadian Album charts. He released his second studio album, “Love Revolution,” in 2013, followed by the EP “I Am Blake McGrath” in 2017. His third studio album, “INNERvention,” released in September 2019, debuted in the top 20 on the Billboard Christian/Gospel album chart. He released his album “Wild Love” in 2021.
