Bruce Mouat is the youngest skip in curling history to ever win a national title, taking home his first Grand Slam at just twenty-three years old.
This Scottish athlete made a name for himself in 2013 when he started competing on the international stage, making four appearances in the World Mixed Doubles Championships. He started placing in 2015, where he took home two bronze medals from both the Scottish Men’s Curling Championship, as well as the World Junior Curling Championship, going on to win his first tournament at the Dumfries Challenger Series that same year. He skipped his team to their second world juniors the following year, this time, coming in first, which qualified them for their first Grand Slam at the 2016 Humpty’s Champions Cup.
It was in 2017 when Mouat won his first Grand Slam—he skipped his team to gold at the Boost National, being the youngest player ever to reach such heights. He also represented Great Britain at the Winter Universiade, and they were undefeated, taking home first place. His success continued throughout this year, since he won the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard, the Biosteel Oakville Fall Classic, and placed silver at the Scottish Men’s Curling Championship.
Mouat would get used to appearing at the Scottish Men’s Curling Championship; in fact, for three consecutive years, Team Mouat were the reigning champions, adding three golds to their trophy cases. Their winning streak extended outside of Scotland, as well: in 2018, they also won the European Championship, and took home third place after competing in the World Championship in 2018 and 2019. Team Mouat had qualified again for the 2020 championship before it was cancelled because of coronavirus.
