Demetrious Khrisna Johnson was born on August 13, 1986, in Madisonville, Kentucky. He grew up in Parkland, Washington, attending Washington High School where he excelled in wrestling, track, and cross country. Johnson placed 3rd and 2nd in state wrestling during his junior and senior years, respectively. Despite receiving scholarship offers for wrestling, he chose to attend Pierce College for two years, prioritizing staying near his family. He began training in mixed martial arts as a hobby in 2006, eventually joining AMC Pankration under coach Matt Hume. Johnson compiled an undefeated amateur record of 9-0 before turning professional. His early career saw him compete in various local shows and the Alaska Fighting Championships, earning him a contract with World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).
Johnson made his professional WEC debut in 2010 at bantamweight, experiencing his first professional loss. However, his talent was evident, leading Joe Rogan to suggest his potential dominance if a flyweight division were introduced. After WEC merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2011, Johnson transitioned to the larger organization. He competed in the UFC’s inaugural flyweight tournament, winning its first flyweight bout in UFC history, and ultimately became the first UFC Flyweight Champion in 2012 by defeating Joseph Benavidez. Johnson went on to defend his title a record-setting 11 consecutive times, a milestone that cemented his legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats. During his UFC tenure, he earned numerous ‘Fight of the Night,’ ‘Knockout of the Night,’ ‘Submission of the Night,’ and ‘Performance of the Night’ bonuses, demonstrating his versatile skill set.
In 2018, Johnson was traded to ONE Championship, where he continued to compete at a high level. He achieved the 2019 ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion title, further adding to his accomplishments. In 2022, he reclaimed the ONE Flyweight Championship, becoming a two-time champion in the organization. He successfully defended this title in 2023. Throughout his career, Johnson has been recognized not only for his physical prowess and technical skill, including his wrestling foundation and dynamic striking, but also for his strategic approach to fighting. He announced his retirement from MMA in September 2024, becoming the inaugural inductee into the ONE Hall of Fame.
