DeVonta Smith was born on November 14, 1998, in Amite City, Louisiana. He attended Amite High Magnet School, where he participated in basketball, football, and track and field. A highly-rated five-star prospect, he committed to the University of Alabama to continue his football career. During his freshman year in 2017, Smith contributed to Alabama’s national championship victory, notably scoring the game-winning 41-yard touchdown reception in the College Football Playoff National Championship against Georgia. His collegiate career continued to flourish, culminating in a standout senior season in 2020 where he recorded 117 receptions, 1,856 receiving yards, and 23 receiving touchdowns. These impressive statistics led him to win the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first wide receiver to receive this award since 1991 and only the fourth overall. He also secured his second national championship with Alabama in 2020, where he was named the Offensive MVP of the championship game.
Smith was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles as the tenth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, reuniting with his former college quarterback, Jalen Hurts. Despite some initial concerns about his physical frame, Smith quickly established himself in the NFL. In his rookie year, 2021, he set the Eagles’ franchise record for most receiving yards by a rookie with 916 yards. His career progression continued steadily, and in the 2022 season, he achieved a career-high 1,196 receiving yards. Partnering with A.J. Brown, they formed the Eagles’ first duo to each record over 1,000 receiving yards in a season, a feat they repeated in 2023. In 2024, Smith became a Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles, making him one of only five players to win a Super Bowl, a college national title, and the Heisman Trophy.
Smith has demonstrated consistent performance, recording 7+ receiving touchdowns in three consecutive seasons (2022, 2023, 2024). He signed a three-year, $75 million contract extension with the Eagles on April 15, 2024, solidifying his role within the team. Off the field, Smith demonstrates community involvement, hosting the DeVonta Smith & Friends Celebrity Softball Game annually to raise funds for autism research. He has also partnered with the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign to support the Eagles Autism Foundation.
