The legendary Eric Cantona is an actor, director and producer, and a former professional footballer. Often regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, he is credited with having a leading role in making Manchester United one of the dominant force in English football during the 1990s. He also made 45 appearances for his native France on the international stage, scoring 20 goals. He was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021. He has been acting since 1995, and has appeared in numerous film, TV and documentary productions, most notably 1998’s Elizabeth, 2009’s Looking for Eric, and 2020’s Inhuman Resources.
Born and raised in Marseille, France, Cantona began his footballing career as a youth player when he was 14-years-old after he joined SO Caillolais in 1980. A year later he joined Auxerre, and after two years in their youth team he made his professional first-team debut in 1983. He went on to play for Marseille, and Nîmes, before crossing the Channel to join Leeds United in 1991. He helped the Yorkshire side win the First Division title 1991-92, and the FA Charity Shield in 1992, before leaving for Manchester United for £1 million in November 1992. His status at Old Trafford quickly became legendary and he was an integral part of making Sir Alex Ferguson’s team a dominant force in English football during the 1990s, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and three FA Charity Shields. At the end of the 1996-97 season he announced that he was retiring from football at the age of 30. Since then he has concentrated on acting, as well as forging a successful playing career in Beach Soccer for France.
