Gable Steveson was born in Portage, Indiana, on May 31, 2000. He started wrestling at a young age, following the path of his older brothers. The family later moved to Apple Valley, Minnesota, where Steveson attended Apple Valley High School. During his high school career, he became a four-time State Champion and maintained a prep record of 210-3, including a 171-match win streak. He also earned titles as a two-time Cadet World Champion and a Junior World Champion in freestyle wrestling, demonstrating early aptitude and dominance in the sport. His high school performance earned him the Junior Schalles Award in 2017 for best high school pinner and the Junior Hodge Trophy in 2018. Upon graduation, he committed to the University of Minnesota.
Steveson excelled in collegiate wrestling for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, achieving a career record of 103-3 (.972), the best winning percentage in Gopher Wrestling history. He became the only five-time All-American in Gophers wrestling history and one of only six two-time NCAA Champions (2021, 2022) at Minnesota. He also secured four top-3 finishes at the NCAA Championships, a program first. Notably, Steveson is the only heavyweight wrestler to win the Dan Hodge Trophy twice (2021, 2022) and the only wrestler in Big Ten history to win four heavyweight titles (2020, 2021, 2022, 2025). Furthermore, he claimed two Most Outstanding Wrestler awards at the Big Ten Championships (2021, 2025).
In 2021, Steveson earned a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the 125-kilogram freestyle wrestling category, becoming the first American super-heavyweight to win freestyle Olympic gold since 1992. After a brief stint in professional wrestling with WWE from 2021 to 2024, and an NFL contract with the Buffalo Bills in 2024, he transitioned to mixed martial arts. He made his professional MMA debut at LFA 217 on September 12, 2025, winning via technical knockout in the first round.
