Gary C. Miller, known professionally as Gary Mule Deer, was born on November 21, 1939, in Deadwood, South Dakota, and grew up in Spearfish. His career in entertainment commenced at the Buffalo Bar in Deadwood, where he performed Johnny Cash songs. He later performed locally with his band, The Vaqueros. In 1964, he relocated to Los Angeles, joining the folk music ensemble The Back Porch Majority, which also served as the Tennessee Ernie Ford Singers. He subsequently performed with the rock groups The New Society, signed to RCA Victor, and Bandanna, under Paramount Records.

In the early 1970s, Mule Deer partnered with Denny Flannigan to establish the comedy and music duo “The Muledeer and Moondog Medicine Show.” This act gained recognition, appearing on television programs such as The John Byner Comedy Hour on CBS, NBC’s In Concert and The Midnight Special, and David Frost’s Madhouse 90. They toured extensively for six years, performing in comedy clubs, Playboy Clubs, and on the college circuit, opening for rock bands including the Doobie Brothers, Sly and the Family Stone, The Guess Who, and Boz Scaggs.

Gary Mule Deer commenced his solo career in 1975. He was one of six comedians, alongside Jay Leno, featured in the inaugural HBO Comedy Special. He also became a frequent guest on The Tonight Show and served as the comedy host for Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert on NBC for four years. His other television appearances include a series regular role on Make Me Laugh and over 100 appearances on The Nashville Network, including a two-year tenure as a cast member on Hee Haw. Mule Deer has performed in films such as Annie Hall, Up In Smoke, and Tilt, and his work is featured on the DVDs “Jeff Foxworthy’s Comedy Classics” and “The World’s Greatest Stand-up Comedy Collection.” He is also recognized as one of the most-played comedians on Sirius XM Satellite Radio’s Clean Comedy Channels. On January 6, 2023, he was invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry, officially inducted on March 10, 2023, by Vince Gill. He regularly performs at casinos in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Atlantic City, and Reno, and has toured with Johnny Mathis for 31 years.
