Born on January 16, 1986, in Frederikshavn, Denmark, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus began playing badminton at age five. His early career saw him secure four junior national titles, including two in singles in 2003 and 2005. He also earned a gold medal at the Under 19 European Team Championships as part of the Danish national team and a bronze medal in the individual boys’ singles event in 2005. These foundational years set the stage for a professional career marked by consistent performance in national and international competitions. He retired from professional badminton at 37 years old in November 2023, with his final tournament being the Norwegian International.
Vittinghus transitioned to senior play in the summer of 2005, quickly securing his first international title at the Norwegian International Championships in November 2006. Over his career, he accumulated numerous wins, including the Turkiye International (2007), Dutch International (2008, 2011), Spanish Open (2009, 2013), Irish International (2010), Belgian International (2014), and Denmark International (2019). A career highlight came in June 2016 when he contributed to Denmark’s first Thomas Cup victory. Later that year, he won his first BWF Super Series title at the Australian Open. In January 2021, he was a runner-up at the Thailand Open, a Super 1000 event. Throughout his career, Vittinghus consistently ranked among the top players, reaching a career-high world ranking of 8 on January 22, 2015.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus has embraced media roles. He hosts his own podcast, “A Year On Tour with Vittinghus,” where he discusses his experiences on the BWF World Tour. He also co-hosts “The Badminton Experience” with fellow Danish player Anders Antonsen, featuring discussions on various badminton topics, player interviews, and Q&A sessions.
