About

Hugh Michael Jackman was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on October 12, 1968. His parents, both English, moved to Australia shortly before his birth. Jackman’s early life included a passion for the outdoors and a strong academic background, including a communications degree with a journalism major from the University of Technology Sydney. Following his university studies, he pursued formal drama training at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, receiving an offer for a starring role in the ABC-TV prison drama “Correlli” immediately after his graduation in 1994, where he met his future wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.

Jackman’s career progressed rapidly into prominent stage roles in Australia, including Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast” in 1995 and Joe Gillis in “Sunset Boulevard” in 1996. His international recognition grew after his performance as Curly in the Royal National Theatre’s production of “Oklahoma!” in London’s West End in 1998, which earned him an Olivier Award nomination. His breakthrough film role came in 2000 as Logan/Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s “X-Men,” a character he would portray across multiple films, establishing him as a global figure in the superhero genre.

Throughout his career, Jackman has demonstrated a wide range of talent, moving between action films, romantic comedies, and acclaimed musical performances on Broadway. Notable film roles include “Kate & Leopold” (2001), “Van Helsing” (2004), “The Prestige” and “The Fountain” (2006), “Australia” (2008), and “Les Misérables” (2012), for which he received an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award. On Broadway, he earned a Tony Award for his role in “The Boy from Oz” and hosted the Tony Awards four times, winning an Emmy for one of these appearances. He also hosted the 81st Academy Awards in 2009. Jackman has continued to receive accolades, including a Grammy Award for “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack in 2017 and a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2019 for his contributions to the performing arts and global community.
