Hunter Ryan Dickinson was born on November 25, 2000, in Alexandria, Virginia. He attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. During his high school career, Dickinson grew to 7 feet 1 inch and demonstrated a versatile skillset. He helped lead DeMatha Catholic to two state championships and was recognized as the Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year in 2020. He also earned first-team All-WCAC honors three times and was invited to the Jordan Brand Classic in 2020. Following his high school achievements, Dickinson committed to play college basketball at the University of Michigan.
Dickinson’s collegiate career began with immediate impact at Michigan. As a freshman in the 2020-21 season, he was named a consensus second-team All-American, Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and first-team All-Big Ten. He consistently led the Michigan Wolverines in scoring and rebounding for all three seasons he played there, reaching the NCAA tournament’s Sweet Sixteen twice and Elite Eight once. His performances included multiple double-doubles and he achieved milestones such as 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds while at Michigan. After three successful seasons and considerable individual recognition, Dickinson entered the NCAA transfer portal, eventually committing to the University of Kansas.
At Kansas, Dickinson continued his high-level play. In his senior season (2023-24), he was named the Big 12 Conference Preseason Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. He earned consensus second-team All-American honors and was a first-team All-Big 12 selection. He led the Big 12 in rebounding for the season with 10.9 rebounds per game. Following a strong 5th year season (2024-25), where he repeated as Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year and earned third-team All-American recognition, Dickinson pursued a professional career. After going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft, he signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans on June 27, 2025, with an affiliation to the Birmingham Squadron of the NBA G League.
