JaVale McGee was born on January 19, 1988, in Flint, Michigan. He attended Detroit Country Day School, Providence Christian, and Hales Franciscan High School. He played college basketball for the Nevada Wolf Pack, where he averaged 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds during his sophomore year before declaring for the NBA draft. McGee’s professional career began when he was selected 18th overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2008 NBA draft. He signed a two-year, $2.4 million deal with the Wizards, marking the start of his journey in the league. During his tenure with the Wizards, he notably participated in the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, showcasing his athletic abilities. On March 15, 2011, McGee recorded his first career triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 blocks against the Chicago Bulls. Following this, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2012, where he made his first playoff appearance.
McGee continued to progress in his career, re-signing with the Denver Nuggets for a four-year, $44 million contract in 2012. He later had brief stints with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2015 and the Dallas Mavericks from 2015 to 2016. A significant turning point in his career came when he signed with the Golden State Warriors in 2016, contributing to their NBA championships in 2017 and 2018. He then moved to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, where he earned his third NBA championship in 2020. Throughout these years, McGee consistently provided strong defensive presence and impactful play from the center position. His career has been marked by adapting to various team roles and contributing to championship-winning rosters.
Beyond his NBA career, McGee has pursued other ventures. He started the Juglife Foundation in 2013, focused on promoting water awareness and hydration, and has collaborated with Hope 4 Kids International to build wells in Uganda. In his personal life, McGee became a full-time vegan in 2017. He also developed a career as a record producer under the moniker Pierre, releasing his debut album in 2018 and co-producing a song on Justin Bieber’s album “Changes” in 2020. In 2021, he achieved an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. Olympic team, making him and his mother, Pamela McGee, the first mother and son to win gold medals in Olympic history. His recent playing career includes time with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2020–2021), a return to the Denver Nuggets (2021), the Phoenix Suns (2021–2022), another return to the Dallas Mavericks (2022–2023), and the Sacramento Kings (2023–2024), before joining the Vaqueros de Bayamón in 2025 where he won the BSN championship, and currently the Illawarra Hawks in 2025.
