Jeff Dean is an American computer scientist and software engineer, born on July 23, 1968, in Hawaii. His educational background includes a B.S. in computer science and economics from the University of Minnesota in 1990, where he completed an honors thesis on parallel neural network training. He then earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Washington in 1996, with his dissertation focusing on compiler optimizations for object-oriented languages under advisor Craig Chambers. Before joining Google, Dean worked at the World Health Organization’s Global Programme on AIDS from 1990 to 1991, developing software for statistical modeling in epidemiology. From 1996 to 1999, he was at Digital Equipment Corporation’s Western Research Lab, where he contributed to profiling tools, microprocessor architecture, and information retrieval systems.
Dean joined Google in mid-1999 and has since been a key figure in the company’s technical development. He co-founded the Google Brain project/team in 2011, aimed at advancing intelligent machines. His work has spanned various areas, including machine learning, large-scale distributed systems, computer systems performance, and AI applications. He has been instrumental in the design and implementation of foundational Google technologies such as MapReduce, BigTable, and Spanner, which underpin many of Google’s products. He also led the development of TensorFlow, an open-source machine learning software library, released in 2015, which is now widely used globally.
