Jeff Dean is Google’s Chief Scientist, focusing on AI advancements and their applications to solve broad societal challenges. After joining Google in mid-1999, Jeff Dean quickly became instrumental in the design and implementation of foundational technologies that underpin many of Google’s products. He co-authored the seminal MapReduce paper (OSDI’04) in 2004, followed by the BigTable paper (OSDI’06) in 2006, and the Spanner paper (OSDI’12) in 2012, all of which established core distributed systems paradigms. Dean was also a co-founder of the Google Brain project/team in 2011, aimed at advancing intelligent machines within the company.
His ongoing influence will be further recognized as he receives the 2025 ACM SIGMOD Systems Award for Spanner and joins the board of Laude Institute, both in 2025.
