Jillian Leigh Michaels, born on February 18, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, is an American fitness trainer, nutritionist, businesswoman, media personality, and author. Her early life was marked by struggles with weight, particularly after her parents’ divorce at age 13. This personal experience led her to embrace martial arts and developed her interest in exercise and fitness. She attended California State University, Northridge, and supported herself by working as a bartender and personal trainer. In 2002, Michaels established Sky Sport & Spa, a sports medicine facility in Beverly Hills, after a brief tenure as an agent with International Creative Management.
Michaels became widely known through her appearances on the NBC series “The Biggest Loser,” beginning in October 2004 as the Red Team trainer for two seasons. She returned to the show in 2007 as the Black Team trainer and also contributed to the Australian version of the show from 2006 to 2008. In 2010, she announced her departure from “The Biggest Loser” after its eleventh season, with her final appearance in May 2011. Following this, NBC launched “Losing It with Jillian” in June 2010, a spin-off series where she worked with families in their homes and workplaces.
In 2008, Michaels founded Empowered Media, LLC, with business partner Giancarlo Chersich, which has grown into a significant wellness empire. This company focuses on a wide range of wellness solutions, including nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle products. Her career also includes authoring nine books on health and wellness, with eight becoming New York Times Best Sellers. Additionally, she hosts a weekly podcast, “Keeping It Real,” and has developed the “Jillian Michaels: The Fitness App,” which has received awards for its contribution to the health and fitness category.
