Born on March 20, 1983, in Peterborough, Ontario, John Epping was introduced to curling through his family, with his grandfather founding the Ennismore Curling Club. Epping developed into a skilled curler early in his career, winning the Ontario Junior championship in 2004. He further demonstrated his versatility and talent by winning the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in 2006, highlighting his early aptitude for competitive curling and setting the foundation for his future professional trajectory in the sport.
Epping transitioned from playing third for Nick Rizzo to skipping his own team in 2006. His career gained momentum with his first Grand Slam victory at the 2008 National while playing second for Wayne Middaugh, marking a significant milestone. He secured his first Grand Slam title as a skip at the 2012 Players’ Championship, further establishing his leadership capabilities on the ice. Epping’s career includes four Grand Slam victories, completing a career Grand Slam by winning all four ‘majors’ with his 2018 Masters win. He has also represented Ontario multiple times at the Tim Hortons Brier, earning a bronze medal in 2018, and has found success in mixed doubles curling with partner Lisa Weagle.
Over the years, John Epping has continually adapted his teams and strategies, demonstrating resilience and a consistent presence at the sport’s highest levels. He has consistently built competitive rosters, competing in numerous Grand Slam events, Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, and provincial championships. His efforts culminated in winning the Canada Cup in 2019, securing his team a place in the 2020 Continental Cup. Epping continues to compete, notably joining a Northern Ontario team for the 2024-25 season, where he won the Northern Ontario Men’s Provincial Curling Championship. Outside of curling, Epping is employed as a sales director and is openly gay, advocating for the LGBTQ community through various initiatives.
