Justin Bethel

Justin Bethel became a pivotal figure in the NFL after being selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round (177th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft, marking the first Presbyterian player drafted since 1969. During his collegiate tenure at Presbyterian, Bethel showcased exceptional athleticism, recording 54 tackles and two interceptions in his freshman 2008 season. He further distinguished himself in 2009 by leading the team with 79 tackles and blocking three kicks, earning a spot on the Big South Conference all-conference second-team defensive squad. His remarkable athletic prowess, including a widely publicized 60-inch vertical jump prior to the draft, led to an invitation to the NFL Combine where his 39.5-inch vertical leap was the highest among all defensive players.

In his rookie NFL season, Bethel immediately made an impact, returning a blocked field goal 82 yards for a touchdown in 2012. Bethel quickly established himself as one of the league’s elite special teams players, earning three consecutive Pro Bowl selections in 2013, 2014, and 2015. His 2013 selection was particularly historic, making him the first Presbyterian player to become a Pro Bowler. He was recognized as the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Week 9 of the 2014 season and later named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for December 2014.

Bethel officially announced his retirement from professional football on January 8, 2025, culminating a remarkable and impactful NFL journey.
