Kai Zachary Perlado Sotto, born on May 11, 2002, in Las Piñas, Philippines, began his basketball journey early in life, playing from the age of four. His father, Ervin Sotto, was a professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), establishing a family lineage in the sport. Kai Sotto rose to prominence in the Philippines during his high school career at Ateneo de Manila High School. Here, he demonstrated significant potential, leading the Ateneo Blue Eaglets to a championship in UAAP Season 80 (2017-18) where he was named Finals MVP. In his final high school season (2018-19), he earned the UAAP Juniors MVP award, averaging 25.1 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game.
In 2019, Sotto moved to the United States to further his basketball career, joining The Skill Factory preparatory program in Atlanta, Georgia. His performance there, including an MVP award at the King Invitational tournament in January 2020, attracted interest from American colleges. However, he chose a professional path, signing with the NBA G League Ignite in May 2020. Due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions and national team commitments, he later departed from Ignite. His professional career then led him to the Australian National Basketball League (NBL), where he joined the Adelaide 36ers in 2021. He spent two seasons with the 36ers, earning the NBL Fans MVP award in both 2022 and 2023. During this period, he also declared for the 2022 NBA draft but went undrafted.
Following his time in Australia, Sotto moved to Japan’s B.League, signing with the Hiroshima Dragonflies in February 2023. He later had a loan spell with the Yokohama B-Corsairs for the 2023-24 season, where he achieved new career highs in scoring. In June 2024, he was signed by the Koshigaya Alphas. Sotto has consistently represented the Philippines national team, participating in various youth tournaments, including the SEABA Under-16 Championship where he won a gold medal in 2017, and later in senior tournaments like the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He is currently recovering from a torn left anterior cruciate ligament sustained in January 2025, which will sideline him for at least six months.
