Lasha Bekauri was born on July 26, 2000, in Arkhiloskalo, Georgia. He embarked on his judo career at a young age, demonstrating early promise in the sport. His initial achievements included winning the gold medal at the 2017 World Cadets Championships in Santiago in the -73kg category, and the European Cadet Championships U18 in Kaunas the same year. He continued his ascent in junior categories, securing dual Junior World Championship titles in 2018 in Nassau and 2019 in Marrakesh, both in the -90kg division. These junior successes established a strong foundation for his senior-level career.
Bekauri’s transition to senior competition brought rapid international attention. In 2019, he earned a silver medal at the Summer Universiade in Naples and a gold medal at the IJF World Masters in Qingdao. His career reached a significant milestone at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, held in 2021, where he won his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s -90kg event. This was followed by a gold medal at the 2021 European Judo Championships in Lisbon and the 2021 Grand Slam Tel Aviv, further solidifying his position as a leading judoka. He continued to compete successfully at major international events, including securing a bronze at the 2022 World Championships in Tashkent and a silver at the 2023 World Championships in Doha.
His remarkable consistency was highlighted by winning the IJF World Masters in Budapest in 2023 and Grand Slam titles in Tbilisi in both 2023 and 2024. A defining moment in his career came at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where he successfully defended his Olympic title, earning his second consecutive gold medal in the men’s -90kg category. This achievement cemented his status as one of Georgia’s greatest judokas. Throughout his career, Bekauri has consistently ranked among the top judokas globally in his weight class, reflecting his dedication and skill.
