Luke David Maye was born on March 7, 1997, in Cary, North Carolina. His father, Mark Maye, was a former quarterback for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Luke Maye developed his basketball skills at William A. Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina, where he earned a spot on the Associated Press’ All-State team twice. He also participated in high school baseball for four years, showcasing his athletic versatility. Maye’s college career began at the University of North Carolina, where he initially committed without a scholarship but was later granted a full scholarship by head coach Roy Williams.

Maye’s college journey at North Carolina saw a significant progression. His freshman season (2015-2016) involved limited playing time. However, his sophomore year (2016-2017) included a pivotal moment when he hit a game-winning jump shot against Kentucky in the Elite Eight, contributing to North Carolina’s victory in the 2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship. This performance highlighted his ability to deliver in crucial situations. In his junior season (2017-2018), Maye had a breakthrough, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, leading the team in rebounds and earning Third-team All-American honors. He also won the ACC Most Improved Player award in 2018. He returned for his senior season (2018-2019), continuing his strong performance with averages of 14.9 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, and received the Senior CLASS Award.

Following his distinguished college career, Maye pursued professional basketball. He signed with the Milwaukee Bucks’ Summer League team in 2019 and later joined their NBA G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd. Maye then moved to international leagues, playing for Dolomiti Energia Trento in Italy (2020-2021), Baxi Manresa in Spain (2021-2022), Covirán Granada in Spain (2022-2023), Tofaş in Turkey (2023-2024), and currently for the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins in the Japan Professional Basketball League (2024-present). Throughout his career, Maye has consistently demonstrated a committed and professional approach to the sport.
