Margaret Omotayo Sanni Alphonsi, born on 20 December 1983, in Lewisham, south London, England, became a prominent figure in international women’s rugby. Despite being born with a club foot, she pursued a career in rugby, playing as a flanker for Saracens W.R.F.C. and representing England. Her international career spanned from 2003 to 2014, during which she earned 74 caps, scored 28 tries, and was instrumental in significant team victories. These achievements established her as one of the most recognizable names in women’s team sports.
Alphonsi’s career was marked by numerous successes, including winning a World Cup with England in 2014 and contributing to a record seven consecutive Six Nations crowns. In 2010, she was named The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, and in 2016, she was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Her contributions to the sport were further recognized with her appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to rugby. After retiring from play in 2014, Alphonsi transitioned into media, becoming a commentator for live rugby matches.
Since her retirement, Alphonsi has developed a successful career in broadcasting, working with major networks such as ITV, Sky Sports, and BBC. In 2015, she became the first former female player to commentate on men’s international rugby for ITV during the Rugby World Cup. She has also served as a regular columnist for The Telegraph. Beyond sports, Alphonsi has appeared on diverse media platforms, including Stella Magazine, BBC’s Children in Need, and The One Show. She holds an MSc in Sports & Exercise from Roehampton University, a BSc in Sports & Exercise from De Montfort University, and an honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Bedfordshire.
