Matt Hamilton, born on February 19, 1989, in Madison, Wisconsin, and raised in McFarland, Wisconsin, is an American curler. His curling journey began at an early age, competing in youth leagues and local tournaments, which quickly led him to prominence in the sport. He is a member of the Madison Curling Club, where he developed his skills. Hamilton attended McFarland High School and later Edgewood College in Madison. His early career saw him win junior championships, and in 2008, he earned a gold medal at the World Junior Curling Championships. He further achieved a bronze medal at the 2009 World Junior Championships.
Hamilton gained significant recognition as part of Team Shuster, nicknamed “The Rejects,” after the 2014 Winter Olympics. This team, including John Shuster, Tyler George, and John Landsteiner, was formed after they were not selected for the High Performance Program. Their determination led to success, including a gold medal at the 2015 U.S. Men’s Curling Championship. A pivotal moment in his career was at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, where he, alongside Team USA, secured the first Olympic gold medal for the United States in men’s curling. He also competed in mixed doubles with his sister, Becca Hamilton, finishing sixth. He continued his Olympic journey at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games, where Team USA placed fourth in men’s curling.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Hamilton has cultivated a diverse professional portfolio. He is a former research and development technician for Spectrum Brands. Currently, he works as a radio host for ESPN, contributing to sports media. He is known for his distinctive mustache and charismatic presence, which has contributed to his public image. Demonstrating a philanthropic spirit, Hamilton donated his hair to a children’s wig foundation during the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games and actively supports StacheStrong, a non-profit dedicated to brain cancer research. His interests also include watch collecting and cooking, adding to his public persona.
