Michael Karim Malarkey was born on June 21, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon. He was raised in Yellow Springs, Ohio, to an Irish-American father, Jim Malarkey, and a mother, Nadia Bushrui, of Italian and Palestinian heritage. Malarkey is the oldest of three brothers. His early life in Ohio included performing in local hardcore bands after high school, where he developed his musical skills, including learning guitar and taking on lead vocalist roles. In 2006, he moved to England to further his artistic education, studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. This training laid the groundwork for his career in theatre, television, and music.
Malarkey began his professional acting career on the London stage, securing lead roles in significant productions such as Tennessee Williams’s “Spring Storm” and Eugene O’Neill’s “Beyond the Horizon” at the Royal National Theatre. He also portrayed Jay Gatsby in an adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” and Elvis Presley in the Original London Company of “Million Dollar Quartet.” His transition to screen work included recurring roles in RTÉ’s “Raw” and “Mr. Sloane” alongside Nick Frost. A turning point in his television career came in 2013 when he was cast as Lorenzo “Enzo” St. John in season 5 of The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries.” Initially a recurring character, his popularity led to him being promoted to a series regular for seasons 6 through 8.
Following his tenure on “The Vampire Diaries,” Malarkey continued to expand his acting portfolio with diverse roles. He appeared as Dizel in Amazon Prime Video’s “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” in 2017 and as Sam Foster in Crackle’s crime drama series “The Oath” from 2018 to 2019. In 2019, he starred as Cinch Barton in the thriller film “A Violent Separation” and gained further recognition as Captain Michael Quinn in “Project Blue Book” for The History Channel (2019-2020). Subsequent television appearances include Deputy Harvey in ABC’s “Big Sky” (2021), Emmett in “Westworld” (2022), Cole in “Quantum Leap” (2022), and Seamus O’Meara in “Law & Order: Organized Crime” (2023). In 2024, Malarkey joined the main cast for the second season of Netflix’s “The Night Agent.” Alongside his acting, Malarkey maintains an active music career, releasing several EPs and studio albums, including “Mongrels” (2017) and “Graveracer” (2020).
