Petrolhead Pato O’Ward is a professional racing driver, who competes in the IndyCar Series for Arrow McLaren SP. He was the Indy Lights champion in 2018, and the WTSC PC champion in 2017. In 2021 he made his official debut in the Formula 1 Rookie Test event in Abu Dhabi for the McLaren Formula One team.
Born in Mexico and raised in Texas, O’Ward started racing go-karts when he was six-years-old. In 2013, when he was 14, he made his open-wheel racing debut, in Latam Fórmula 2000, Formula Renault 1.6 NEC and Pacific Formula F2000. In 2015 he débuted in the Pro Mazda Championship, and the following year he collected 7 wins, 5 pole positions and 8 podium finishes en route to a second-place finish. He then competed in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and was part of the team to win the 2017 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in the PC class, making him the youngest driver to ever win both races at 17 years old. His team went on to win the 2017 Championship and North American Endurance Cup (NAEC). In 2018 he started competing in the Indy Lights Championship. He dominated the track, winning 9 of 17 races and was named Rookie of the Year and easily captured the drivers’ championship. He competed in the NTT IndyCar Series, Super Formula, and FIA F2 Championship, and in 2020, he took Rookie of the Year honours in the NTT IndyCar Series, as well as compete in the Indianapolis 500.
