Patricio “Pato” O’Ward Junco was born on May 6, 1999, in Monterrey, Mexico. He later moved to Texas. O’Ward began his racing career in karting in late 2005, competing until 2012. In 2013, he transitioned to open-wheel racing, participating in Latam Fórmula 2000, Formula Renault 1.6 NEC, and Pacific F2000. Further advancing his career, he competed in the French F4 Championship in 2014. O’Ward then joined the Pro Mazda Championship with Team Pelfrey in 2015, finishing sixth overall. He continued with Team Pelfrey in 2016, ending the season as runner-up in the Pro Mazda Championship. In 2017, O’Ward signed with Andretti Autosport to compete in the Indy Lights championship, where he won nine of seventeen races, was named Rookie of the Year, and secured the drivers’ championship in Portland.
O’Ward made his IndyCar Series debut with Harding Racing in 2018, qualifying fifth and finishing ninth in Sonoma. In 2019, he secured a part-time deal with Carlin for thirteen races. Later that year, he joined Arrow McLaren SP for the 2020 season. In his first season with Arrow McLaren SP, O’Ward earned pole position and his first podium finish at Road America, placing second. He finished sixth in the Indianapolis 500, earning the Rookie of the Year award. He achieved multiple podium finishes, including consecutive second and third places at World Wide Technology Raceway, ultimately securing fourth place in the overall standings.
The 2021 season saw O’Ward emerge as a title contender, securing his first IndyCar victory at the XPEL 375 at Texas Motor Speedway. He also achieved a second win on a street course in Detroit and claimed the A.J. Foyt Cup for being the highest-scoring driver on oval courses. In 2022, O’Ward continued with Arrow McLaren SP, securing his first win of the season at Barber and a second-place finish in the 106th Indianapolis 500. He later won at Iowa, marking his first short oval victory. The 2023 season saw him achieve three second-place finishes and ultimately fourth in the championship standings. In 2024, O’Ward was awarded a win at St. Petersburg and secured two additional victories at Mid-Ohio and the Milwaukee Mile, marking his most successful season to date with three wins. In 2025, he continues to demonstrate consistent performance with two wins and multiple podium finishes.
