Attending American Heritage School, Surtain II became a five-star recruit and participated in the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He committed to the University of Alabama, where he excelled as a true freshman, starting 12 games and recording 37 tackles and an interception in 2018. Over his college career, he consistently demonstrated strong defensive capabilities, culminating in a National Championship win with the Crimson Tide in 2020 and being named defensive MVP of the 2021 Rose Bowl.
Surtain II entered the NFL as a highly-touted prospect, selected ninth overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2021 NFL Draft. His debut year saw him accumulate 58 combined tackles, 14 passes defended, four interceptions, and a touchdown, earning him a spot on the 2021 All-Rookie Team by both Pro Football Focus and the Pro Football Writers of America. His career progression continued with first-team All-Pro honors and Pro Bowl selections in 2022, and another Pro Bowl invitation in 2023. These achievements led to a significant four-year, $96 million contract extension with the Broncos in 2024, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. He further solidified his status by winning the 2024 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, becoming the first defensive back to do so since 2019 and only the second player in Broncos history. Ranked 10th among the NFL’s top players by his peers in 2025, Surtain II continues to be a dominant force in the league.
