About

Robbie Rogers was born on May 12, 1987, in Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles, California. He began playing soccer at age four, quickly progressing to competitive leagues. His early career saw him play at Mater Dei High School, where he was a two-time High School All-American, and one season of college soccer at the University of Maryland, helping the Terrapins win the 2005 NCAA Championship. In August 2006, Rogers signed his first professional contract with Dutch Eredivisie side Heerenveen, though he primarily played for their reserve team. He returned to the United States in February 2007 to join Major League Soccer (MLS) team Columbus Crew.

Rogers’ time with Columbus Crew, from 2007 to 2011, marked a significant period in his professional soccer career. He became a regular starter, contributing to the team’s victory in the 2008 MLS Cup and two Supporters’ Shield titles in 2008 and 2009. Individually, he was named to the MLS Best XI in 2008 and earned the MLS Player of the Week award. Internationally, he represented the United States U20 team, participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics with the U23 squad, and earned 18 caps for the senior United States national team, scoring two goals. After leaving Columbus Crew, he had a brief stint with Leeds United and Stevenage in England in 2012–2013, which was affected by injuries.

In February 2013, Rogers publicly came out as gay and announced his retirement from professional soccer, drawing significant media attention. However, he returned to play for the LA Galaxy in May 2013, becoming the first openly gay male athlete to compete in a major North American professional sports league. With the LA Galaxy, he made 78 appearances and was part of the team that won the MLS Cup in 2014, making him the first openly gay male athlete to win a major professional team sports title in the U.S. He retired permanently in November 2017 due to injuries. Following his retirement from soccer, Rogers transitioned into the entertainment industry, becoming a producer and actor. He has been involved in notable projects such as producing “Fellow Travelers” (2023), “My Policeman” (2022), and “All American” (2018–2025), along with a cameo in “Love, Simon” (2018).
