Ruth Buzzi

Ruth Buzzi gained widespread recognition for her role on NBC’s ‘Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In’ from 1968 to 1973, appearing in every episode, including the pilot. Her work on the landmark sketch comedy series earned her a Golden Globe Award in 1973 and five Emmy nominations. Throughout her tenure, she portrayed a range of memorable characters such as Flicker Farkle, Busy-Buzzi the Hollywood gossip columnist, Doris Swizzler, and a Burbank Airlines Stewardess. She became best known for her portrayal of Gladys Ormphby, a drab, purse-wielding spinster who frequently engaged in comedic confrontations with Arte Johnson’s ‘dirty old man’ character, Tyrone F.

She lent her distinctive voice to numerous animated series, notably as Nose Marie in ‘Pound Puppies’ (1986) and Mama Bear in ‘Berenstain Bears’ (1985). In 1993, she joined the cast of ‘Sesame Street’ as the beloved shopkeeper Ruthie, and also voiced characters Suzie Kabloozie and Feff. Her contributions to entertainment were recognized with an induction into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 1971, and later into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2002. Buzzi continued to perform as Gladys in various ‘Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts,’ utilizing her signature purse prop in interactions with roastees like Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball.

Her enduring impact and significant career were further honored in 2014 when she received the Topaz Award by Women in Film (Dallas, Texas chapter). After a career spanning over six decades across stage, screen, and voice work, Ruth Buzzi retired from acting in 2021.
