Scott Thomas McLaughlin, born on June 10, 1993, in Christchurch, New Zealand, began his racing career in karting in 1999. His family relocated to Australia’s Gold Coast in 2003, where he continued to compete in karting events. In 2010, McLaughlin debuted in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, becoming the youngest driver to race a V8 Supercar. He won the 2012 Dunlop V8 Supercar Series and the V8 SuperTourers Championship, showcasing early potential in touring car competitions. These initial successes laid the foundation for his professional career.
McLaughlin’s career progressed significantly in the Supercars Championship. He joined Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2013, securing his first race victory and finishing tenth in his rookie season. He continued with the team when it became Volvo Polestar Racing, achieving four race wins in 2014 and a fifth-place standing. In 2017, McLaughlin moved to DJR Team Penske, where he truly excelled. He secured the Supercars Championship title three consecutive times from 2018 to 2020, setting a record with eighteen wins in the 2019 season, including the Bathurst 1000. These achievements established him as a premier talent in Australian motorsport.
In 2021, McLaughlin transitioned to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES with Team Penske, becoming the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year. Initially, he focused on adapting to the new open-wheel format, securing his first podium finish at Texas Motor Speedway. In the 2022 season, he achieved three race victories at St. Petersburg, Mid-Ohio, and Portland, finishing fourth in the championship standings. His strong performance continued into 2023, where he secured a win at Barber and finished third overall, marking him as the highest-scoring Team Penske driver for the year. The 2024 season saw him win at Barber, claim pole for the Indianapolis 500, and secure two oval wins at Iowa and Milwaukee, re-establishing his presence at the top of the series.
