Sean McDermott began his distinguished NFL coaching career in 1999, joining the Philadelphia Eagles as a scouting administrative coordinator. He quickly transitioned into coaching roles, serving as Assistant to the Head Coach in 2001, followed by Assistant Defensive Backs Coach in 2004, a period that included an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIX with the Eagles in 2005. McDermotts ascent continued with his promotion to Linebackers Coach in 2007 and Secondary Coach in 2008. In 2009, he was named Interim Defensive Coordinator, a position he solidified permanently, overseeing the Eagles defense through the 2010 season.
In his inaugural season, he successfully ended the franchise’s 17-year postseason drought. Under McDermott’s guidance, the Buffalo Bills have transformed into a perennial contender. Over his first eight seasons as Head Coach, he has remarkably led the team to seven playoff appearances and secured five AFC East division titles, a period of sustained excellence for the franchise. His impact extended to contract negotiations, signing an extension with the Bills through 2025 in 2020, the same year he led the team to an AFC East Division Title and their first AFC Championship Game appearance under his leadership.
McDermott continued to demonstrate his comprehensive leadership in subsequent seasons, assuming defensive play-calling duties for the Bills in 2023 and guiding the team to another AFC Championship Game appearance in 2024. Recognizing his consistent ability to elevate the franchise, the Bills extended his contract through the 2027 season in 2023. Sean McDermott’s tenure is defined by his proven track record of building and sustaining a highly competitive culture, consistently delivering measurable success, and establishing the Buffalo Bills as a dominant force within the NFL.
