Shaivonte Aician Gilgeous-Alexander, also known as SGA, was born on July 12, 1998, in Toronto, Ontario, and grew up in Hamilton. His mother, Charmaine Gilgeous, was an Olympic track athlete for Antigua and Barbuda, and his father, Vaughn Alexander, played high school basketball, providing him with an athletic foundation. Gilgeous-Alexander attended St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School and Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School in Hamilton before moving to Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for his junior and senior years to enhance his basketball skills. He played one year of college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats in the 2017–18 season, where he averaged 14.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, earning Second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman Team honors, and was named the SEC tournament MVP in 2018.
Gilgeous-Alexander was selected 11th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2018 NBA draft but was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers on the same night. In his rookie season (2018–19), he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. In July 2019, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he quickly became a central player. The 2019–20 season saw him improve significantly, recording his first NBA triple-double with 20 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists. After dealing with injuries in the 2020-22 seasons, he broke through in the 2022–23 season, earning his first NBA All-Star selection and an All-NBA First Team nod, averaging 31.4 points per game.
The 2024–25 season marked a pinnacle in Gilgeous-Alexander’s career. He led the NBA in scoring with 32.7 points per game, was named the NBA Most Valuable Player, and guided the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first championship since relocating to Oklahoma City. He also secured the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award. This made him only the fourth player in NBA history to win the MVP, Finals MVP, and a scoring title in the same season, and the first Canadian to win NBA Finals MVP. He signed a record four-year, $285 million extension with the Thunder in July 2025. Internationally, he won a bronze medal with the Canadian national team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and was named to the World Cup All-Tournament Team, earning him the Northern Star Award as Canada’s athlete of the year. Gilgeous-Alexander is recognized for his leadership, work ethic, and mature approach to the game.
