Shoaib Bashir

Shoaib Bashir was born on October 13, 2003, in Chertsey, Surrey, England. He developed his early cricketing skills playing club cricket for Guildford and age-group cricket for Surrey and Middlesex. His talent for off-spin bowling, despite his height of 6 ft 4 in, was notable from an early age. Prior to joining Somerset, Bashir refined his game during the winter of 2022-2023 playing club cricket in Australia for the Lindfield District Cricket Club. He never pursued seam bowling, focusing entirely on his off-break technique.

Bashir’s professional career began to take shape when he signed a contract with Somerset in October 2022, following impressive performances in Second-XI fixtures, where he secured nine wickets at an average of 14.11. His debut for Somerset in the T20 Blast occurred on June 7, 2023, against Hampshire, and his first-class debut followed on June 11, 2023, against Essex. A significant turning point in his career came when a video of him bowling to former England captain Alastair Cook went viral on social media. This clip caught the attention of England captain Ben Stokes, who then advocated for Bashir’s inclusion in the England Test squad for the tour of India in January 2024. This selection was remarkable, given Bashir had only played six first-class matches at the time.

His international debut for England in Test cricket took place on February 2, 2024, against India in Visakhapatnam. He encountered initial challenges, including visa issues related to his Pakistani heritage that delayed his entry into India, an incident that garnered significant media attention and even involved the British Prime Minister. Despite these hurdles, Bashir quickly made his mark, claiming his maiden Test five-wicket haul (5/119) in only his second Test appearance on February 25, 2024. This achievement also marked his first five-wicket haul in his first-class career, making him the second-youngest overseas spinner to achieve this feat in India. His career continued to progress with a loan spell at Worcestershire in June 2024 for the T20 Blast and another at Glamorgan in 2025. He was named Young Player of the Year at the 2024 Cricket Writers’ Club Awards. Bashir took his third Test five-wicket haul (5/41) against the West Indies on July 21, 2024, becoming the youngest England spinner to achieve this at home. In May 2025, he reached his fiftieth Test wicket during a match against Zimbabwe, becoming the youngest Englishman to reach this milestone, and secured his new best Test figures of 6/91, earning him man-of-the-match.
