Simon Mayo

Simon Andrew Hicks Mayo, born on September 21, 1958, in London, England, has established himself as a prominent figure in British radio broadcasting and as a published author. His extensive career with BBC Radio began in 1982, spanning four decades and covering pivotal roles across multiple stations. Mayo earned an MBE in the 2021 Birthday Honours for his significant contributions to broadcasting, a testament to his long-standing influence and popularity.

Mayo’s early career involved local radio at BBC Radio Nottingham from 1982 to 1986, where his talent led to a national call-up to BBC Radio 1. He quickly ascended to one of the most prestigious roles in UK radio, hosting the “Radio 1 Breakfast Show” from 1988 to 1993. During this period, he developed popular segments such as “On This Day in History” and “Confessions,” which later inspired spin-off books. His ability to connect with audiences and champion unexpected music hits, like “Kinky Boots,” cemented his appeal.
