Tarjei Bø, born on July 29, 1988, in Stryn, Norway, is a professional biathlete. His career began with international success at a young age, earning a gold medal in the individual discipline and a silver in the pursuit at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Presque Isle, Maine. He continued to demonstrate his potential with a silver in pursuit and relay at the 2007 Junior World Championships in Martell-Val Martello, Italy. Bø made his Biathlon World Cup debut on March 26, 2009, in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. His early career also included significant achievements at the 2009 European Championships in Ufa, Russia, where he secured gold medals across all four events he entered: individual, sprint, pursuit, and relay. This consistent performance laid the foundation for his transition into senior-level competition.
The 2009–10 season marked Bø’s Olympic debut and first senior gold medal, achieved in the 4×7.5 km biathlon relay at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The following season, 2010–11, was a breakout year for Bø; he claimed his first individual World Cup victory in the sprint race in Hochfilzen, Austria, on December 10, 2010, followed by a victory in the pursuit race. He concluded this season as the overall World Cup winner, securing the crystal globe by finishing five points ahead of teammate Emil Hegle Svendsen. During the 2011 World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, Bø won three gold medals (20 km individual, 4×7.5 km relay, and mixed relay), and multiple bronze medals, making him the most successful biathlete at those championships. He has since won numerous Olympic and World Championship medals across team and individual events, accumulating 3 Olympic gold medals, 2 Olympic silver medals, 2 Olympic bronze medals, 12 World Championship gold medals, 7 World Championship silver medals, and 9 World Championship bronze medals. He also holds multiple World Cup discipline titles, including two in Sprint (2010–11, 2023–24), and one each in Pursuit (2010–11), Mass Start (2020–21), and Individual (2021–22).
Bø has consistently performed at an elite level, participating in four Olympic Games from Vancouver 2010 to Beijing 2022, and numerous World Championships from 2011 to 2025. His career highlights include anchoring winning relay teams and achieving regular podium finishes in sprint and pursuit races. He has 15 individual World Cup victories and 44 relay victories. His sustained success across various disciplines and major international competitions underscores his position as a prominent figure in biathlon. His continued active participation in the Biathlon World Cup through the 2024–25 season demonstrates his lasting impact and competitive drive within the sport.
