The Marías are an American indie pop band based in Los Angeles, known for their bilingual approach to music, performing songs in both English and Spanish. The band’s core members are lead vocalist María Zardoya and drummer/producer Josh Conway, along with guitarist Jesse Perlman and keyboardist Edward James. María Zardoya, originally from Puerto Rico and raised in Atlanta, met Josh Conway at a show in Los Angeles where she was performing. Their collaboration began almost immediately with songwriting, leading to their first release, the EP “Superclean Vol. I” in 2017, followed by “Superclean Vol. II” in 2018. These early works established their unique sound, characterized by a fusion of jazz percussion, guitar riffs, and horn solos.
In 2020-2021, The Marías signed with Atlantic Records, marking a significant step in their career. This period saw increased chart success, with their single “Hush” topping the Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart in September 2021. Their debut studio album, “Cinema,” was released on June 25, 2021, and received critical acclaim, earning a Grammy nomination in 2022 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The band expanded their reach through touring, supporting artists such as Halsey on her Love and Power Tour in 2022.
Further collaborations and releases continued to elevate their profile. In 2022, The Marías collaborated with Bad Bunny on “Otro Atardecer” from his album “Un Verano Sin Ti,” which also earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Subsequent collaborations include tracks with Cuco (“Si Me Voy,” 2023), Tainy and Young Miko (“Mañana,” 2023), and Eyedress (“Separate Ways” and “A Room Up in the Sky,” 2023). Their second studio album, “Submarine,” released on May 31, 2024, continued their artistic evolution and garnered further industry recognition, including nominations for American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards in 2025.
