Born in Invergordon, Scotland in 1994, Tom Stoltman was diagnosed with autism at age five. This diagnosis did not hinder his athletic development; he was an active sportsman, notably playing football. At 16, inspired by his older brother Luke’s success in strongman, Tom began weight training. His natural aptitude quickly became apparent, leading Luke to guide him into strongman training. By 18, Tom had won his first competition, the Highlands Strongest Man, and soon after placed fifth in Scotland’s Strongest Man in 2013.
Stoltman’s career progressed steadily, consistently placing second behind his brother Luke in Scotland’s Strongest Man from 2015 to 2017. His breakthrough year was 2017, finishing second in the UK’s Strongest Man and earning his first invitation to the World’s Strongest Man (WSM). He claimed his first Scotland’s Strongest Man title in 2018. His performance at the 2019 WSM, where he placed fifth, alongside a third-place finish at World’s Ultimate Strongman, cemented his status on the international stage. In 2020, he narrowly missed the WSM crown, finishing second, and set a world record in the Giants Live Castle Stones event with a time of 16.01 seconds.
The pinnacle of Stoltman’s career arrived in 2021 when he won the World’s Strongest Man title, becoming the first Scotsman to do so, and also secured the Britain’s Strongest Man title. He successfully defended his WSM title in 2022, winning by a significant margin. Following a brief break, he returned to competition in 2023, achieving a second-place finish at WSM and podium placements at the Strongman Classic and Shaw Classic. In 2024, Stoltman reclaimed his third World’s Strongest Man title, further cementing his legacy in the sport. He is particularly renowned for his proficiency in the Atlas Stones event, holding multiple world records in this discipline.
