Josef Newgarden was born on December 22, 1990, in Nashville, Tennessee. He began his racing career at age thirteen in karting, quickly capturing four championship titles between 2005 and 2006. In 2006, he transitioned to open-wheel racing, competing in the Skip Barber Racing School Series where he achieved multiple podium finishes and, in 2008, became the first U.S. driver to win a Formula Ford Festival title. His early career also included a move to England in 2009 to compete in the British Formula Ford Championship, finishing as runner-up with nine race wins, and a stint in the GP3 Series in 2010.
Newgarden returned to the United States in 2011 to compete in the Indy Lights Series, where he secured the championship with five wins and ten podiums from fourteen races. He joined the IndyCar Series in 2012 with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, achieving his first career win in 2015 at Barber Motorsports Park and a second win later that year in Toronto. In 2016, racing with Ed Carpenter Racing, Newgarden led 282 of 300 laps at Iowa, setting an INDYCAR record for most laps led by a race winner, and finished 3rd in the Indianapolis 500.
In 2017, Newgarden joined Team Penske, and in his first year, he earned an IndyCar Series Championship with four wins and nine podiums. He secured his second championship in 2019, again with four wins. Newgarden is also a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, achieving back-to-back victories in 2023 and 2024. Off-track, he co-wrote a children’s book, “Josef’s BIG Dream,” and is known for his fitness enthusiasm, including an appearance on “American Ninja Warrior.” He actively supports charities through celebrity ping-pong tournaments for the SeriousFun Children’s Network.
