About

Steve Peters, born on July 5, 1953, in Middlesbrough, developed an early interest in understanding the human mind. His academic journey began with studies in mathematics at Stirling University, followed by a Post Graduate Certificate of Education at Sheffield University, where he earned a distinction in teaching. He dedicated several years to teaching mathematics in secondary schools and colleges. During this period, Peters also engaged extensively in voluntary work for organizations like Help the Aged, NSPCC, and RSPCA, and contributed to starting a victim support scheme in Boston, which later led to the National Victims Support Scheme. His commitment to education and social welfare laid the groundwork for his comprehensive understanding of human behavior.

Pursing a medical career, Peters attended St Mary’s Medical School, part of the University of London. He was active in student governance, serving as year representative, secretary, and president of the students’ union, and also directed the medical school opera. He earned a prize for medical statistics and represented London University in athletics, reaching the 200-meter final at the British University Championships. After graduating, he held various positions in surgery, medicine, general practice, and psychiatry across the UK. He became a consultant psychiatrist within the National Health Service for twenty years, including roles as Clinical Director of Mental Health Services and at Bassetlaw District General Hospital, and also worked as a forensic psychiatrist at Rampton Secure Hospital. Concurrently, he served as a senior clinical lecturer and undergraduate dean at Sheffield University, eventually becoming a professor of psychiatry, a position he still holds. He earned a master’s degree in medical education, a post-graduate diploma in sports medicine, and a doctorate in medicine, along with two Senate awards for teaching excellence.

Peters transitioned his expertise to elite sports in 2001, beginning with British Cycling. His full-time engagement with the team from 2005 onwards significantly contributed to the success of athletes like Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton. Sir Dave Brailsford recognized him as an invaluable asset. Following his success in cycling, Peters expanded his influence, working with Ronnie O’Sullivan from 2011, contributing to his World Snooker Championship wins in 2012 and 2013. He joined UK Athletics after the 2012 Olympics, helping athletes such as Adam Gemili. In 2012, he began working with Liverpool F.C. and was recruited by the England football team in 2014. Beyond his clinical and sports psychology work, Peters is an accomplished author, publishing “The Chimp Paradox” in 2012, which sold over 615,000 copies, and later “My Hidden Chimp” and “The Silent Guides” in 2018, and “A Path Through the Jungle” in 2021. He also established Chimp Management Ltd., offering consultancy and training services.
