One of the world’s best badminton players, Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen was a bronze medallist at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics and is the 2017 World Champion. His victory against Lin Dan in the World Cup final made him the first Dane in 20 years to win the title, and a month later he won the Japan Open to top the world rankings for the remainder of 2017. He was also the European men’s singles champion in both 2016 and 2018 and was previously the first European player to win the World Junior Championships. Axelsen is a popular player around the globe, where he has captured the hearts of fans notably giving an interview in Chinese after winning his Olympic bronze medal.
Born in Odense, Axelsen’s talent was clear from an early age, and he was only 16 when he rose to international prominence after winning the 2010 Youth World Championships. In the following eight years Axelsen established himself as one of the best players in the world, and as a household name in Denmark where he has received several major sports awards.
In March 2020 Axelsen won the prestigious All England Open title, the first European to do so for over two decades. With the Tokyo Olympic Games now fast approaching, the popular shuttler is in top form and his army of fans both in Denmark and around the world will be right behind him all the way.
