American rapper Dana Dane is famous for combining his humorous, light-hearted rap with his unique fashion sense. Well-known as a powerful rapper thanks to his recordings including ‘A Little Bit of Dane Tonight’, ‘Cinderfella Dana Dane’ (which hit #11 on Billboard magazine’s R&B charts) and ‘Tales From the Dane Side’, his eclectic taste in clothes led the rapper to open his own clothing store (IV Plai Boutique), and although the shop is no longer open he continues to attract attention with his show-stopping outfits.
Born and raised in Fort Greene, Brooklyn in the Walt Whitman housing project, Dane first showcased his musical talents when he formed rap group Kongol Crew with High School of Music and Arts classmate Slick Rick. Once graduated from high school, Dane launched his solo career and signed with record label Profile in 1985. His talent was evident on debut track ‘Nightmare’, but it was the release of his first full-length offering, Dana Dane With Fame (1987) that shot Dane into the mainstream. The commercially successful album achieved gold record status, which Dane went on to match with follow ups Dana Dane 4 Ever (1990) and five years later with Rollin’ Wit Dane.
Away from the world of music and fashion Dane has also been a radio host on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, starred as himself in the movie Brown Sugar and released a novel, Numbers, in 2009.
