Peter Chao is a Canadian comedy star on YouTube with 788k subscribers and a growing online influence, he has 34.8k followers on Instagram. He was born in 1987 in Fredericton, Canada; his parents emigrated from China. He is bilingual – speaking English and Cantonese. He graduated from the Vancouver Film School in 2008 after winning a scholarship and later created the persona of Peter Chao, a character born and raised in Hong Kong for his popular comedy vlogs.
He says he is “Speaking up for timid Asians all around the globe”.
He soon realised that he had a talent for vlogging as he gained popularity posting comedy videos of Asian stereotypes. His humour has been controversial as it can defy political correctness. His comedy has mocked everyone from Rihanna to Justin Bieber as he did a parody of the songs ‘As Long as You Love Me’ and ‘Boyfriend’. His fan base is known as ‘Chao Nation’ and he reaches people on an international level. Tik Tok has further increased his fan base and he has appeared in ‘Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling’ where he has been ‘taught a few things about wrestling’.
He decided to follow a career in acting with the aim of playing a character that was not Peter Chao. He is featured in the TV series ‘Legion’ and the Bruce Lee story ‘Birth of the Dragon’. He was offered the role of Young Tommy on a Netflix Original ‘Wu Assassins’ which premiered in 2019. Chao continues to make a name for himself and feature in more and more on screen productions as well as growing his online platform.
